Let's jump straight into the action and have some examples of using the principles of Areas and Volumes. For the purposes of this page I will be taking p as the value on a calculator.
A triangle with a base length of 6 cm and a height of 10 cm is drawn in a rectangle measuring 6 cm X 10 cm. What is the area of the shaded region below?
Ok, we need to find the area of both the triangle and the shaded area and then subtract one from the other. The area of a triangle is half the flat base multiplied by the vertical height. So, in this case, we will do:
(0.5 X 6) X 10 = 3 X 10 = 30 cm
The area of the whole rectangle is:
6 X 10 = 60 cm
Therefore the area of the shaded region is 60 cm
What is the area of a sector of a circle whose radius is 5 cm and degree of expansion is 60 degrees? [This is just a flashy term I used and made up! :-)]
The area of a sector = pr
Therefore the equation we do in this case is p X 25 X
This gives our answer: 13.09 cm
