Hello and welcome to the Formulae section of the ! In this section we'll look at how to rearrange formulae and how to work out equations when you substitute numbers for letters. Let's go!

Rearranging formulae involves moving algebraic symbols from the LHS(left-hand side) to the RHS(right-hand side)and isolating the necessary symbol(i.e. the one that needs to be expressed in terms of the other symbols).

Rearrange (transpose is the posh way of saying this) the formula y = 9x - 6 to make x the subject.

A nice, easy one to start off with! Firstly, move the 6 to the LHS and change the sign. (This is a shortcut method, only to be used when you fully understand the principles of Linear Equations!)This gives:

y + 6 = 9x

Now, put the 9 underneath the LHS(divide both sides by 9).

x =

Rearrange the formula to make p the subject.

Right. Firstly, we need to expand the brackets, giving . Now we must multiply both sides by 2, which gives:

9q + 9qp = 6z.

Since we want to get p on the LHS, subtract 9q from both sides.

9qp = 6z - 9q

Finally, divide both sides by 9q to get p on the LHS.

p =

And just in case you are a little confused, here is EXACTLY how to go about transposing (I'm posh now) formulae........................................
