What are quadratic equations? Quadratic equations are equations that include an x
in them. An example of a quadratic equation is x
+ 5x + 4. Here's how to solve them.
The quadratic formula is big, mean and bad! Here, have a look at it. Before you do, understand that it uses the formula ax
+ bx + c.
In this formula, a represents the coefficient (number in front) of x
, b represents the coefficient of x and c represents, well, er, the number at the end of the equation! As long as we know these three values (which aren't hard to come by!) we can plug them into the formula and find x.
Use the quadratic formula to solve the equation x
+ 4x + 4.
We could factorise this one, but we've got to use the formula!
becomes ,
which shows that
x = -2 and x = -2.
