In this section of the we are going to take a look at ratios, so let's get started!

Let's say an artist, for example, wanted to make the colour purple. He would mix blue and red in the ratio 1 : 1 (one to one), i.e. equal amounts of blue and red. Now, if he required a different shade, he may mix the colours in the ratio 2 : 1 ( two to one), but even if he did, it doesn't mean to say that he can only mix so much red with so much blue-he could mix 200,000 tons of red with 100,000 tons of blue if he wanted! That would only affect the amount of purple made, not the shade of it.

We "cancel" ratios in the same way we do fractions. We do this to avoid huge ratios like 555555 : 5555553! To cancel ratios, there must be a number that divides exactly into BOTH sides of the ratio. Once you've found a number that does this, divide it into both sides. Keep doing this until you can't do it any more, and you've cancelled your ratio!

"Cancel" the ratio 45 : 35.

The number 5 divides into both sides, so the ratio becomes 9 : 7. We can't divide any more numbers into this ratio, so we've cancelled it!

One more thing about canceling ratios is that you can make them into fractions. You do this by putting the number on the left of the ratio on the top of the fraction, and the number to the right on the bottom of the fraction. You can also make fractions into ratios in the same way. You can obviously cancel ratios in fraction form.
